Market Basket Weaving Workshop at Crowley’s Ridge State Park

Basket weaving is an ancient art that was practiced by Native Americans and pioneers alike in early Arkansas.  Baskets were both beautiful and functional and could hold everything from berries to babies.  In the past few years basketry has seen an increase in popularity as modern crafters apply their creativity to this traditional art form.  On Saturday, September 27th craft enthusiasts are invited to participate in a market basket weaving workshop at Crowley’s Ridge State Park.  The workshop will be held from 9:00am to 4:30pm at Pavilion 3.  There will be a break for lunch, and it is recommended that guests bring a sack lunch to allow more time to work on their baskets.  The pattern featured at this workshop will be a “market basket.”  This traditional design features a square woven base with an arched wooden handle.  It is very versatile and can be used for decoration, storage, or delivering homemade goodies.  It also makes a great toddler Easter basket.  The cost is $25 per person and all materials are provided.  Space is limited and registration is required.  For more information or to register, call (870)573-6351 or email the park interpreter at elizabeth.bittner@arkansas.gov.  Crowley’s Ridge State Park is located on Highway 168N in Walcott; from Paragould, travel west on Highway 412, and from Jonesboro travel north on Highway 141 to reach the park.
