Soap Making Workshop at Crowley’s Ridge State Park

Time to get clean!  Many people recall their grandparents making their own soap in a kettle with ashes and animal fat.  The soap industry has come a long way since that time, but all soaps still involve the same three ingredients that pioneers used- water, fat, and lye.  On Saturday, September 13th from 9:00am to 1:00pm come to Crowley’s Ridge State Park and see how simple the soap making process really is.  A park interpreter will be hosting a workshop on making soap using the cold-process method- no kettle required!  Participants will pair up and each pair will make a different soap recipe.  For example, one type of soap may produce a lot of lather making it good for shaving, while another may be scented to repel insects.  All participants will receive a booklet on soap making, copies of the recipes, and at least one bar of each type of soap to take home.  Due to the long curing process (4 – 6 weeks) participants will need to return to the park at a later date to pick up their finished soaps.  Samples will be available for participants to take home the day of the workshop.  The cost is $20 per person and all materials are provided.  It is recommended that participants bring snacks that they can munch on quickly.  Once the soap making process begins there will be no time for a long lunch break.  Space is limited and registration is required.  For more information or to register, call (870)573-6351 or email the park interpreter at elizabeth.bittner@arkansas.gov.  Crowley’s Ridge State Park is located on Highway 168N in Walcott; from Paragould, travel west on Highway 412, and from Jonesboro travel north on Highway 141 to reach the park.
